What a Cool Mom!

Alecia has basketball camp this week at the rec center. On the first day, I was watching with amazement at her being thouroughly unruffled by the fact that there were 60 kids, and only 5 were girls, when a little boy walked in a few minutes late.

He was wearing his Baskeball Camp t-shirt like everyone else, along with his name tag. But, unlike everyone else, he was wearing snow boots.

That's right, big ole moon-bootish snowboots. He walked in, calm and confident with his head held high. Not hanging his head in embarrasment that he didn't put his shoes away or that his room was so messy that he couldn't find them.

And I just thought: Your mom is so cool! It seems like way too often, we see our kids as an extension of us. And if they don't look put together, we feel like everyone will look at us like we aren't a have-it-all-together mom. And if our kid looks like they couldn't find their shoes, we might look like we have a messy house. Good on that mom for not caring, and just letting her kid be who he is!

Today, this same kid walked in, a few minutes late wearing swimming goggles on his forehead. He pulled them down onto his eyes, walked confidently over to his coach, gave him a high-five, and started playing. Good on him, too! They should both get an award.

I just had to include this picture, cuz it's so dang funny!

My kids wear mismatched shoes to library time. Does that count as a "Cool Mom" characteristic?
