Crazy Genes

Let me start off by saying that I love lefties. I married a lefty, my daughter is a lefty, my sister is a lefty, my brother is a lefty, and my dad wanted to be a lefty, but back in the day they wouldn't
let you. I love how you can look at a lefty's handwriting
without knowing the person, and know they are a lefty.
But life for a lefty can, on occasion, be difficult.
.
Alecia has been taking golf lessons. Being a tried and true member of the Southpaw Club, I had them give her... a southpaw club. She started out left, but that apparently wasn't working out so well; she kept switching sides. It's kinda hard to hit the ball with the wrong side of the club, so I kept instructing her to switch back. She stayed batting left for a bit, but her hands were all wrong. Her teacher was busy, so I went to her to explain again how to hold it.
.
Me: "No, this hand needs to be down further.
It's your strong arm, so you'll be able to hit better."
Her: "That's not my strong arm."
Me: "What? But it's your left!"
Her (very calmly explaining as if I were a little slow): "Just because it's the hand I write with, doesn't mean
that it is the arm that is the strongest."
.
Who woulda thought? Needless to say, we switched clubs. So, with that explained to me carefully, I got to wondering. Does that also explain why, when she kicks a ball, she kicks like an athletically challenged four year old when she uses her left foot, and like a athletic prodigy when she kicks with her right?
.
And also, what does that mean that my oldest
who is a Righty, can kick only with his Left?
.
A Lefty who kicks Righty, and a Righty who kicks Lefty.....
.
Lance and I almost never fight; we both HATE to. So I'm wondering if this was a compromise by our genes-- letting each of us give a part of our handed-ness to both of these kids instead of one of us fighting for dominance? If so, that was really sweet of his genes to be chivalrous and let me pass my completely right-handedness to our middle child!

A few tries at being a Southpaw golfer...

One of her instructors helping her to reconcile the warring factions of handed-ness and strength. Apparently, it's not so easy.

Ahh, putting. Strength not needed so much here.

I married a lefty as well. We run into problem when we eat. He always bumps my arm if I sit on his left side.

I love the pictures of her golfing. The class looks like a ton of fun.

Hi! From a righty who can only cart-wheel lefty! Thanks for formating from right to left!!

Thinking of how teachers used to literally beat left-handedness out of kids, it makes me wonder what we'll look back on in 75 years or so and think "wow--I can't believe we used to do such stupid things!"

That is so cool that she is taking golf lessons! Jake has loved it and the teachers! Maybe we will have to take our Pro's out to the range!

I just stumbled upon your blog...wasting time searching for princess pix for my daughter's 3rd b-day (I'll let you guess which entry it directed me to). Love your blog! I was a lefty- tho I'm [just] 35, I'm from the south and I was not permitted to write with my left hand in school (I was one of those kids it was 'beat' out of. I now do many things with my left hand/arm and many with my right. I'm left-leg dominant in soccer - and right leg dominant on a skate board. Your daughter will likely continue to just do what's comfortable! http://ourmdfamily.blogspot.com
